You've got the SKUs wrong here - there's a Windows 7 Home, and a Windows 7 Professional, but no Home Premium or Home Professional. Also .edu email addresses are the US educational domain name only, but the original Windows site includes that so presumably it comes from over-enthusiastic copy and paste.
Great news for me, I was going to wait a good few years until an upgrade moved me onto 7.
"3. The meticulous students who made the effort to Windows 7 Home for £49.99 or Professional for £99.99 and thought they had a good deal."
Well considering that this is only an upgrade version, I do think they got a good deal. Plus they can cancel the pre-order anytime they want so long as they bought it from a retailer who do not charge for preorders, like Amazon or play.com
Of course if I were a student and I had done option 3, I would go for the deal anyway and if I got it cancel my pre-order for Windows 7 (as no money had yet been taken)
Or get both and sell on the full pre-order copy for a profit - more beer! ;)
so it is just an upgrade version you get? and if it is, is there anyway to do a clean install from the upgrade version like there is with snow leopard? also I read somewhere the offer runs till 3rd Jan 2010

Thats me... but Ive been using the beta / RC for so long who knows where all my legitimate Vistas/XPs are.
"Yep, a no strings £30!" ... other than you must already have Windows XP or Vista?
And why would anyone choose the Home Premium version over Professional? Compared to normal upgrade pricing, it's a saving of £50 versus £160. Am I missing something?

@BobaFett: actually you must already own a full version of Vista (or a version of XP and an upgrade version of Vista) - Windows 7 won't upgrade from XP unless MS has gone back on that previous statement...
"The meticulous students who made the effort to pre-order Windows 7 Home for £49.99 or Professional for £99.99 and thought they had a good deal."
Yep me too, but i shall buy this and make a nice profit on eBay with my full version of Windows 7 Home Premium.
The only way to do a 'clean' install with an upgrade version (of Windows) is to reinstall either xp or vista and upgrade straight from that. Bare in mind though, the OS you upgrade from must be activated so no cheating and installing a non-legitimate version just to get the upgrade.
@BobaFett - I have no idea why people would choose Home Premium over Professional. I shall be definitely going for Professional, especially with it having Windows XP Mode for my odd program that isnt compatible with windows 7. Might have been nice though to offer Ultimate for £35...
@sockatume: It does say .edu, but then the example they give is leeds.ac.uk...so I think we should be fine. They also say both "You can take advantage of this offer from September 30th" and "This offer will be available from 1st October" so it's a pretty poor start!
@ChaosDefinesOrder: the statement does specifically say Windows Vista OR Windows XP, so who knows - maybe it's a full version?!? Guessing not though, more's the pity...
And yeah...you'd be mad not to go for Professional!
@ChaosDefinesOrder: Yes you are right, so remove the xp parts in my message also, dont actually know what i was thinking of there, lol. Just upgrade from vista......
Edit: As far as i know you cant upgrade from XP because of the different architectures. However This statement suggests you can, or somehow just students can...
"You can take advantage of this offer from September 30th but you will need to be quick as it is for a limited time only and is only eligible to college and university students with a valid .EDU email address (an email address given by the college or university, for example: Suzanne@leeds.ac.uk ), a PC that is currently running a genuine copy of Windows Vista or Windows XP and can run Windows 7."
After some research i think you might be able to upgrade from xp to windows 7, but not conventional upgrade, as it would wipe all the data off unlike vista to 7 upgrade. To be honest, im not the person to talk about upgrading from xp to 7 because i unfortunately have vista!.
Right, now i have talked too much on this topic with changing my mind too much, so thats it from me. Talk amongst yourselves...
I was one of the meticulous students who pre-prdered Windows 7 HP for £45. Though I won't cancel the order since its a full version and if I didn't want it, I could sell it for a profit once full pricing takes effect. Though, I'll probably get one of these £30 ones just to sell on.
@ farki80, not that I doubt you, but where does the notion that this is not a full version come from? I can't see any definitive information either way on the offer page. As has been pointed out by others, the offer is valid for licenced XP users also, which I understand does not upgrade to 7.
Were you just inferring, or do you have some other source?
@farki80 maybe the Windows 7 install routine just looks for a genuine copy of XP/Vista before it will play? I'm not much of an expert here, but I thought there was no upgrade path from XP anyway since the underpinnings are too dissimilar - in layman's terms (that's me!) a different footprint to the foundations.
