I honestly do not understand why MS is so desperate to fase out XP. They still sell it don't they? They still make a profit from it don't they? In fact I think they profit more from a sold copy of XP Pro than they do from Vista Business. So why is it so important for them to have only one single Operating System. Why not two? Think about Ford or Volkswagen or Toyota selling just a single model. Or Philips or Sony selling just one model TV. How weird would that be? Does MS really think such a business model couldn't work for operating systems.
Vista SP1 might be a decent OS (I use it for DX10) but it doesn't do anything (besides said DX10) for me that XP SP1+ wouldn't do and probably do better. Vista still is buggier than XP SP1+, nothing major, but annoying stuff nonetheless, and slower too.
If I wasn't so lazy, I'd go back to XP. Microsoft should just accept that they can't make everybody use each and every version of their Windows. Apple seems to accept that people skip OSX versions too.
I've sold my Vista laptop and am currently using an XP Thinkpad until I buy a new one. While XP does the job there are loads of minor things that I miss from Vista. Granted, Vista just wouldn't run well on the XP machine I'm using but given decent hardware I'd choose Vista every time.
@Tim
Only Apple can get away with charging for a service pack (Snow Leopard).

apple can practically get away with anything. if steve jobs *took a dump* in a bowl and put an apple logo and "made in california" sticker on it, it'd sell for hundreds.
I hope everyone isn't a bit optimistic about Windows7. I bet Vista looked pretty decent on initial specs too. Why does anyone thing 7 is going to be significantly more successful?
Especially if its another major departure, then its green fields again which microsoft have a knack of turning into blue fields/screens.....blue fields of death....nope sorry can't make that metaphor work.

I suppose they need to push the Vista route so that it becomes the norm, if we all just kept with XP then M$ would end up having no OS to sell. I think the thing that might have got a lot of people angry about Vista was the D10 route they took, they was no reason D10 couldn't be implemented on XP, and they is even hacks to prove this.
