"Personally, as someone who has been using Windows 7 as his primary OS for three months now, I know one thing: XP, Vista, I could never go back..."
I'm thinking the same thing, typing this from Ubuntu.

I downloaded a copy of W7 beta and have it installed on a old, infrequently desktop.
To be honest i'm very hesitant about installing it on my primary work laptop (dual boot) since I have no idea what happens when the Beta expires? Is it just as simple as buying a key from MS or will I have to re-install everything from fresh and lose all my programs / drivers?
@ lifethroughalens - It will most probably require a new install using the full retail version.
That doesn't really bother me however since I'm getting a new build every month or so then I'll get the RC when it hits. I won't be buying it, though...

Try installing some games on XP if they don't run on 7, I can't believe how damn fast XP is after using Vista x64 for a year and a half.
Otherwise Windows 7 is definitely the way forward, the screeny looks very similar to the 7000 build I'm using.
Personally I like both. They're better at doing different things, and the same goes for Linux, but I don't really think either is a lot better than the other.
@Ohmz - I meant in your original statement - "I'm thinking the same thing, typing this from Ubuntu." In my version it would be "I'm thinking the same thing, typing this from OS X."
I didn't mean to suggest that OS X was better then Linux. I think whatever OS you choose to use is the right one for you. Sorry for any misunderstanding.
@ Pbryanw. Lol! I think there's a disconnect here! I'm aware you're using OS X, that's why I said at least it's better than Vista! We were all saying we use Ubuntu instead of Windows but you wanted to join in with us but you are using OS X and said just substitute it with Ubuntu so you could join with our opposition to Windows. But no need to fake it per se, Mac OS X is still better than Vista! Hope that clears up any more misunderstandings!
I had some Windows 7 issues when I installed the Beta on my previous system. Nevertheless I'd seen enough goodness to give it a final go on the new system I built - i920/6gb/1gb GTX285/4 x 32gb SLC SSDs in RAID 0 as boot drive. Obviously with 6gb RAM I put the x64 version on.
Apart from one issue with a virtual CD driver when coming out of "sleep", the system has been excellent and i have had minimal (if any) issues installing stuff.
Microsoft should give this away free to current Vista owners as it is what Vista should have been. It's like the "B" version of Windows 95 compared to the original. Hopefully the RC will upgrade the Beta version to save having to re-install stuff.
I got a new dell xps in jan, it came with vista. What i done was use true image (http://www.acronis.co.uk/homecomputing/products/trueimage/) to take an image of the c drive. This means should i need too i can easily roll back to vista.
I installed w7 and i love it, extremly stable and very user frienly.
Must echo Brian about taking an image of an existing system. Enabled me to roll back after testing Win 7 on my previous system.
If you own a Seagate drive you can get a copy of DiscWizard from their website which is their SE version of True Image - Seagate drive (internal or external) needs to be attached when you run the software.
@ Tony Walker - They're not SLC SSDs then. SLC drives are generally much more expensive (i.e. nowhere near the <£100 you're talking about) than MLC drives as they're much faster and don't have issues with limited read/write cycles. The Intel X25-E is the fastest of them all as far as I'm aware.
I've had a look on Novatech and they don't even sell Samsung SLC SSDs - they only have a couple of MLC drives on there which are over £200. Having said that, I know Samsung do manufacture a 32GB SLC SSD, but they're usually around the £300 mark. If I'm wrong and you really did pick them up for under £100 each then please let me know, I'd like to buy some for eBaying purposes!
