The firmware is also available for us Touch owners but...
"Google Street View and Public transit and walking directions"
These are NOT in the Touch version of the firmware for some strange reason. There is no excuse for this at all, and a lot of Touch owners are already expressing their anger in blogs and forums over it.
Oh, look! Your favourite company has managed to pull of yet another "We'll change the number, but not give you what you actually want, so we can charge you in the future." - I wonder if the next iPhone will be the "iPhone MMS"?
Also, isn't having a "stability update" a bit like saying: "the code we built last time was a bit buggy... Whoops..."
Well I updated my iphone (in the UK) and I don't have google maps street view for London nor public transit details. What is going on here apple - is this phone just for the USA?
As far as public transit details for London even TFL (who run it all) have no idea when, where or if trains and buses run. So don't feel too bad about the iPhone being left behind.
I'm an ipod touch user - feel a little let down by not receiving street view! As Peter mentions as well, 2.2 seems to have broken iPlayer. Keeps coming up with an error saying content needs wifi connection - even though I'm browsing over a wifi connection?
On the plus side navigating menus etc seems much more responsive.
A warning to those with unlocked iPhones too. After upgrading my unlocked (Turbo SIM) 3G iPhone I couldn't get a signal. It was replaced with 'No Carrier' so I've spent all afternoon reverting back to v2.1. I hope it's not been 'bricked'
@Orinj - of course it relocks unlocked and jailbroken phones, surely you know this about new firmware by now?
@DangerousDave - agreed, shame. Thankfully went out with a European girl for many years so can think in kms!
@Peter - iPlayer works for me on 2.2
@Cavalier - see update on my article, though public transport works fine.
@henryg - fring works fine for me on 2.2 also.
Cut and paste and MMS remain ridiculous omissions but otherwise I've found this to be the second best iPhone firmware to date(obviously not for poor iPod touch owners) since 2.0. Apple continues to impress and irritate in equal measure.
Gordon, that's not obviously the case. I upgraded my iPhone 3G to v2.1 without any adverse affect on its unlocked functionality. I just didn't check before going to v2.2.
@Orinj - fair enough, though it has been the case on every other single iPhone firmware update so I'd have to say you were a bit impetuous there ;)
@Gordon - Perhaps. I'm obviously losing my 'geek' awareness of these things to make the mistake. That said, I'm using a hardware unlocking solution (Turbo SIM) which was touted to be impervious to firmware related changes. I'm waiting to hear back from the supplier to get a refund or solution to the issue as their product no longer works.
@Orinj - normally hardware unlocks only work for one particular firmware version, if you can get guarantees beyond that I'll be impressed. I had an unlock iPhone for some time, but gave up in the end swapped to an iPhone 3G on contact, life is just much easier.
