The argument isn't that being thin is necessarily a bad thing, it's that the thinnest TVs are already thin enough. Samsung's latest LED backlit sets are a good example, with more to follow.

If all this slimness comes at the cost of any performance or value, it really isn't worth it.

Its just a step towards hanging a tv on a wall like you would a picture frame. Hopefully in a few years they could be powered wirelessly and have the connections in a wireless av box - a possible insight into the future?

I reckon most TV's are previewed in (or even bought) in large shops such as John Lewis. I certainly went and had a look before ordering online. There is a massive "I want that one" factor associated with extremely thin TVs, especially when placed next to fatter models on stands (rather than wall mounted). Manufacturers know this, and will hence strive for thinner and thinner screens. It's not rational or sensible, and yes it might be to the detriment of picture quality, but there are plenty of examples where form and fashion have dictated development, rather than quality of the product.
