Announcement by Mr Kapil sibal to offer Laptop priced $35 equivalent to approximately INR 1750/- is all time record gimmick created by the Minister. I hope balance amount to the manufacturers shall be paid by him or his Ministry.
@Simon - I think you are missing the point here. We shouldn't be so cynical and criticise such an ambition project without knowing any of the details. Personally I read the story with optimism, albeit with a healthy dose of caution. I would be hugely impressed if they could make a device as described for such a low price point – many have tried and failed! It would clearly not be aimed at high-end consumers, i.e. it will not be an apple competitor. What it could be is a tremendous learning tool for children in the developing world, something the One Laptop project tried to do, but ultimately failed (although I completely applaud the effort and sentiment). As technology advances I can only hope that this is a step towards bringing more opportunity to those that really need it.
I might be wrong, perhaps these devices will be marketed primarily to the developed world for a profit, at the expense of the labour used to build them. At which point my opinion will completely change, obviously. But until that time I think we should have a little faith in people looking to push boundaries, potentially for the greater good of those around them.
