While HD programs are few and far between, the addition of a proper channel is welcome as we will get upscaled pictures for all the SD material. This is extremely welcome bearing in mind standard ITV1 looks awful on Sky with their awful bit rates.

ITV's "..programming has all the worth of a rat chewed Ryvita laced with stupid sauce..." - Of course it's all the fault of the BBC!

Of course the endless repeats on all those huge choice of channels that Rupert Murdo' promised in making a case for Sky and at the launch of it.

I wonder what the Murdos have to say about the launch of the MSN Video Player? See story at:

BBC's iPlayer & Project Canvas "has been roundly attacked by BSkyB, the pay-TV operator that is 39 per cent-owned by News Corporation, parent company of The Times. Sky says the service does not do anything that commercial rivals cannot provide. The satellite broadcaster has also launched an online video player, but it is available only to paying subscribers."

Today sky rang me and offered me an HD box, install and a 12 months HD subscription as an upgrade on my current package all for free. I have literally never been happier.

We Virgin customers may not have 50 HD channels, but we have Video on Demand... (pauses, for effect)... And faster broadband.

(Looks enviously at Sky HD customers with their 50 HD channels, while we have about eight.)

Thanks for the reminder. Clearly Murdos do not only give us repeate tv but old news!! Thank goodness for TR and you Gordon and of course the Beeb.

@KMJB as the say "There are NO free lunches." How many years have you had the old box? What have you paid over that time and just how much Sky tv did you watch with all those pesky ads?

Sky's "average revenues per user at a new high of £464" - I am sure the BBC or ITV or C4 would be able to provide all the Sky programmes for that sort of licence fee!!!

Now compare the BBC licence fee increase by 2% to £145.50 in March 2010 to Sky's revenue up 7% to £5.32 billion and operating profit up 4% to £780m.

Still those Oxbridge lot at the Houses of (glass) Parliament, BBC (gravy train) Governors and Mr Thompson, Dir Gen. cannot rebutt the Murdos.

None of these channels are HD until they are in 1080p as far as im concerned! Watch a movie or something on "SkyHD" then watch the same thing on a 1080p blu-ray and you'll see what im on about.

@Pbryanw - I use Sky HD & 50Mbit Virgin broadband ;)

@Mike337 - you're wrong there. The quality difference is to do with the compression and reduced bitrate in Sky HD broadcasts, not the change in resolution. 1080p is something of a myth akin to megapixels. For example, the first generation 720p Pioneer Kuros are still some of the best TVs ever made - I know, I own one!

@Enigma - Don't get me wrong, I realise I have handed sky a fair packet over the past few years but that doesn't change the fact that getting something for "free" still feels good.

Don't forget as well that if you own a TV you don't have to pay sky any money, that is optional. The license fee on the other hand isn't.

Despite my point I do think the license fee is good value for money.

Itv HD has been on the Sky HD box for ages you just didn't know where to find it. http://www.tellytoad.com/page/itv-hd-on-sky-hd.aspx has a guide to help you set it up.

@Mike337 Sky broadcast all movies up to 1080i with more than a few movies at 720 now. Still HD but you do notice the difference....

I have to agree with xenos, the FreeSat platform needs more "HD" channels. I'm not sure what is on C4 HD but at least provide the option. Is this a case of the Sky platform carrying most if not all HD content but with restriction clauses not to allow C4 to be transmitted via FreeSat.

I chose FreeSat over paying more Sky subs each year (yes I know there's an initial cost for FreeSat) but given KMJB's post I'd be quite happy for them to ring me up... I'll even post my number for them!!!!

Hey, I like 'Free' gifts too!

My point is beware of Greeks (or in this case Aussies) bearing gifts!

The BBC is seriouse competition for the Murdochs. Not just because its 'FREE'. Especially the BBC's excellent internet News service. For example, each time there has been a major event like the 9/11 and 7/7 all my colleagues, like the people elsewhere, were turning to the BBC's website not CNN/Sky etc. Some of us were left no choice but to go for Sky/ITN. Indeed since the 9/11 the BBC has arranged for such a massive spike demand and it worked when 7/7 happened.

Mr Murdoch, like the music, tv and film industry are playing catch-up with the rapidly changing technologies or just don't get it at all and lash out at easy targets like the BBC.

The simple fact is Newspapers are finished and it all began with the advent of CNN. In fact it started with TV news. Indeed the irony is Mr Murdoch's Sky News contributed to the demise of the newspaper. I stopped buying newspaper (funnily enough The Times) sometime in 2002. The TV news is the real killer of newspapers NOT the BBC's internet news website. If Mr Murdoch thinks he can charge us for online version of his newspapers he is seriously mistaken for the aforesaid reasons.

A few years ago I finally ended my PCPlus subscription thanks to TR and other FREE online (including the BBC).

I have a solution to the terresterial TV's (ITV, C-4 and C-5) advertising revenue problem but regrettably neither ITV or C-4 would agree to consider my proposal in confidence. So keep on losing £millions or is it £billions!

Now all those clowns at ITV have to do now is commission some programs that viewers might actually tune in to watch - HD or not.

And in slightly unrelated news Sky now led by Murdoch Jr. will soon be selling its 17.9% stake in ITV at a substantial loss of £339m. With business acumen like that the Murdoch name will matter much less in the future.

It is not Mr Murdoch's business acumen that is flawed, on the contrary, but that of the ITV, (BBC), C4, C5 and formerly NTL as well as their leadership. Sky also has a stake in Freeview! The payback (pun inclusive) has come about because of Mr Branson. Which nicely brings us to the analogy of Sky/Newscorp being the BA of the media world.

Now to the other old chestnut of Sky/Newscorp and its lambs to the slaughter, "..if you own a TV you don't have to pay Sky any money, that is optional. The license fee on the other hand isn't." Well me old maties NOT SO!!!

Firstly, I don't have Sky but I pay for it, ITV, C4 etc when I buy anything because the advertisers charge me for the advertising. Which means you pay even if you have NO TV and/or radio or any media at all!

Secondly, lovely people like our Gordon, existing subscribers, and of course the early uptakers subsidise the offers like the 'Free' HD setbox upgrade etc.

While I am in the flow of things let me clear up some other delusions like the one foreigners/minority ethnics diluting the Bitish way of life and culuture: Alcohol - an Arabic word and the distillation process was invented by the Muslims - no irony actually. They did it to produce perfume for their other invention the Soap!! Yes those clean and nice smelling foreigners!! Mascara is also Arabic; Shampoo from Sanskrit - so much for the "English" language.
