I love Google and everything they do, but how could they convince the likes of Dell & HP to include their OS with new PC's? More importantly, how could they convince the public to switch from Windows?
@Ryan - sounds like you believe everyone else shouldn't even try ;) Let's just get word on whether it exists before destroying it! Besides, it would certainly work with Chrome, Google Maps, Picassa, Gmail, etc etc out the box.
Linux has never had the marketing to get itself off the ground.
Apple charge too much for the hardware.
Google could be just the people to break windows due to it's advertising ability... Anyone for adverts that show pcs with android installed on every youtube page and every google search page?
It would guarantee sales!
And they could always design a virutal machine to run windows if you still wished to do so!!
Competition is a good thing. I just hope that millions don't blindly start praising the system before it is even out.
I fell out of love with Google a while back, a move excerbated by the initial security flaws in the terms and conditions of Chrome. Google is akin to Apple where they create fanaticism amongst their fans, to the point of blindness.
Software is the same as hardware to me - I will use whatever is right for me at the time, based on performance and cost. If an Android OS works out better, I'll give it a try. But I won't be leaping blind into this.
Would be nice to see some more competition in the OS market. There are a lot of nice linux distros out there but they don't have the advertising/compatability to make it big, and Apple is content with it's minority/niche market to whom they can sell grossly overpriced products. And while I won't jump the gun, I'd say that if google did enter the market they have a better chance then most to make a splash.
I've recently ditched Hotmail for Gmail and am using Opera for a week to see if it's better than Firefox, so far so good. I really hope Google is considering an OS, I'm running Vista and hate it. I'm still exploring Google services, going to try out Google bookmarks. We really need competition. Microsofts' stranglehold is bad for consumers. Apple is too pricey and like previously mentioned, Linux doesn't have the compatibility and./or money to really make a challenge in the OS space.
I just wish they'd dedicate all this extra time spent messing with their own OS to finishing off some of their beta range (hint, hint, *cough* Android etc).
Why would they create an O/S when their whole philosophy is that "the web is the platform"? If they are right, all an O/S will need to do is run a browser - indeed, a browser could be said to "be" the O/S. And they seem to have a browser.
