Exactly, as it is now I'd say it was more reminescent of a Linux repository. And as long as there are no payments involved, that's what it actually is.
@Juxtah - it certainly wasn't Apple's original idea, but they certainly popularised it and have pushed it into the mainstream causing other manufacturers to follow. That's a very good thing!
I'm not an Apple fan, but I was referring to the bit of text under the article title
"Wonder where it got that idea... "
Which makes it look like this App store is some kind of original idea accredited to Apple (although most Apple fans I talk to act like Apple invented absolutely everything to do with computers), which is wrong.
@Juxtah - fair point, but again there is a difference between someone thinking up the idea originally and a company being influenced to actually do it when it proves popular off the efforts of another.
@Gordon - I kind of agree, however due to the open nature of Android I don't think they ever had a plan not to include some kind of database of all user created content. As I don't think Android could ever survive without one, and I don't think using a feature that is central to your program should be classed as 'piggybacking' other peoples ideas, especcially when that idea wasn't their original idea in the first place.
