So Firefox global market share has grown from 20% in November 2008 to 24% in April 2009. That is an impressive statistic if true...well deserved also.

So Firefox is made from 100,000's of developer hours, which these guys put the time in purely for a good feeling in their stomach and no money? If so, that is pretty amazing too - especially considering the culture of greed so apparent in today's world.

When IE8 appears on Windows Update I can see it doing better. Not that much mind, most Windows users I know never run updates.

Also, I've had a few problems upgrading to IE 8 so am holding off for a while. And what about those people who use a number of browsers - I use Chrome, Firefox and IE depending on what I'm doing.

I suspect IE8 will have features 'inspired' by/from Firefox like its predcessor IE had the tabs, adblock, script on/off control, extensions/add-ons that F'Fox users had been using for over a year(?). So what is the point of having IE8? That is a question I have been asking about MS IE ever since I started using F'Fox. It is thus nice to see more people are beginning to realise the same. The same being so for Office Org, it just seems to get better an better. MS start waving the white flag.

Sorry, I am very sceptical of these stats. We collect web stats for some public websites at work and Firefox (all versions) is less than 10%! No.1 is IE6 with over 30% and IE7 is close behind. From my own experience, I know that IE6 is still pretty widespread. Many large firms still use IE6 as their corporate standard (mainly due to the costs of changing it and compatibility with legacy apps, etc). I know plenty of "non-techies" who wouldn't even know that a browser has name - let alone what version it is, hence they will just use what ever version of IE came on their PC.

I am not saying the stats I see are 100% accurate for all users on the Net, but because of the sites in question I would be pretty comfortable they represent the general public and business users quite well - they are not "techie" type sites at all. The sites would largely be UK users, so I guess we could be different from the rest of Europe - wouldn't be the first time ;-)

I am not defending IE at all (I am typing this in Firefox!), but outside of the more technically orientated community I just don't think the Firefox take up is as high as these stats suggest.

@Steve32 - you're way off I'm afraid. Whether you choose to believe these stats or not Firefox has been circa 25 per cent globally for some time now. 10 per cent is where the browser was about 3 years ago!

Unless I am missing something, on StatCounters website for the above mentioned date range. The bar graph shows that IE7 was still used more than FF3 in Europe. The line graph has it the other way around. Strange!

@Gordon - you are missing my main point, which is that I am sceptical of the kind of these kind of stats in general. I just quoted some stats as an example.

The stats I quoted were an example of a specific public website. I thought I made it quite clear that it was a non-technical related website, so it would be very plausible that the results would be skewed against Firefox because of the demographic of the users. I suspect a site like TR would see a very different profile. I also didn't try and suggest that my stats were a good representation of the whole world. As the saying goes you have "lies, damned lies, and statistics" ;-)

@Steve, I am intrigued that MS have not quiried such statistics. Now if I become a virtual American for momemt who believes in conspiracies I would say you're from MS ;-). Or if....no, no I will not do that otherwise those guys at GCHQ and CIA will put me an orange straight jacket and cart me off to Miss Universe 2008, Dayana Mendoza's favourite holidy destination that she "didn't want to leave" and is "calm and beautiful" commonly known as Guantanamo. Now who said these babes were air-heads?

@Steve32 - you're still missing the point. The statistics come from a neutral compiling company. I suspect if we did a browser poll on TR Firefox would be closer to 50/60 per cent with the likes of Chrome and Opera even challenging IE7/8 (I have faith in you guys!).

Furthermore, if the stats were way off I'm sure Microsoft would be straight onto StatCounter to query it.
