I'm confident that we will indeed see an iPhone Nano... but not by Christmas. Having a choice of varied iPhone styles would fit the trend in Apple's long-standing business model - like the multiple-choice Mac's and iPod's we see today.
The Daily Mail are very brave to publish an article such as this, because I'm sure there's barely a shred of evidence to back-up their claims, they're just taking a shot and hoping they hit the mark. They've probably just pieced together a whole bunch of rumours, found the trend in these rumours, and taken a wild guess.
But the iPhone isn't exactly a great product to promote for Christmas considering the purchase procedure - ie credit check, person buying is considered person using, contacts etc etc. So this wouldn't be the kinda of thing you'd buy for someone else, right? If a PAYG iPhone Nano came to light then if it came at an attractive price point and a less thorough purchase procedure then it might work... hmm
Errr "The Daily Mail are very brave to publish an article such as this, because I'm sure there's barely a shred of evidence to back-up their claims" - isn't that what they always do in their tabloid-disguised-as-a-broadsheet-style?
AAA-HA-HA-HA! AAA-HA-HA-HA! HOO-HOO-HOO! (Best opening ever. I mean, I believe you, I just think you'd be better off going with generic journalistic filler like, "Sources say".)
Seriously Gordon this is one of the rare cases where you'd have more journalistic integrity if you just flat out lied. Like, "The Guradian says", or "The Independent says", etc.. I'll tell you what I'll do, I'll settle for Telegraph - one time deal - can't say fairer than that.
Lets put this into perspective...I'ts not going to happen!
1) The iPhone itself is selling extremely well at the moment, why canibalise the sales of the iPhone 3G with a cheaper product?
2) The iPhone itself cannot possibly get smaller, at least with the current interface. It's intended to be used with finger and a smaller screen means less room for said fingers and a vast reduction in ease of use, something I'm damn sure apple wouldn't go for.
3)The app store and developers are only just learning how to program and utilise the current iphone hardware/software its highly doubtful that they would introduce a new form factor with different requirements when they havent even got the first one down yet!
So the only way I see this happening is if it is an extrememly cut down version of the iphone, i.e no app store, wifi, 3g etc, and with a simpler interface/OS (most likely a bastardised version of the ipod OS), not sure about touch on it, small screen and touch is a big no no...
