Microsoft has been imposing strict hardware guidelines on manufacturers producing Windows Phone devices meaning we've only had relatively expensive smartphones to choose from. But, with the launch of an updated version of Windows Phone 7.5, codenamed Tango, these strictures have been loosened somewhat, meaning we can expect some more low-end budget smartphones to arrive – like the ZTE Orbit.

Like Nokia earlier in the day, with the announcement of the Lumia 610, ZTE has announced a lower tier Windows Phone device to join its first effort on that platform, the ZTE Tania, which is currently available in the UK.

The new phone, which will be available in the second quarter of this year in "major markets around the world", will come with a 4in 800 x 480 display, a single-core 1GHz Qualcomm processor, a five megapixel camera, 4GB of on-board storage, 512MB of RAM, an FM radio, a full complement of sensors, DLNA and NFC. Pricing has yet to be confirmed.

We will be getting some hands-on on time with ZTE’s new Windows Phone in Barcelona, so check back soon to see our first impressions of the budget smartphone.
