YouTube for Android now supports Google Cardboard VR headsets

Google has announced its official YouTube app for Android now offers support for the Cardboard VR headsets.

The 360-degree videos posted to the site can now be enjoyed in virtual reality, allowing users to look in every direction and enjoy a sense of depth.

Near things look near, far things look far. So if you were excited about 360-degree videos, this is pretty freakin’ cool,” Google wrote on the YouTube blog.

Users with an Android phone and a Cardboard headset can access clips by tapping the new cardboard reader to split the video into left and right eye views.

Early clips include a Hunger Games Experience or TOMS Shoe Giving Trip, but Google is also giving video creators the chance to create their own clips, although a pretty advanced camera rig is required.

Google has also announced it has made every video on YouTube friendly to VR headsets.

While there’ll be no ability to look around the frame, perceive depth or any of that good stuff, users will be able to experience a “kind of virtual movie theatre,” by selecting the Cardboard option from the watch page menu.

The update comes via a new YouTube app from Google Play.

Google Cardboard represents the most affordable way to jump on board with virtual reality. Back in May Google announced that over 1m people were now experiencing VR with cardboard.
