YouTube exploit disables 3DS region-locking

One user has discovered a YouTube exploit that can disable 3DS region-locking.

Intrepid 3DS tinkerer Jordan Rabet – aka smea – has found a simple way to bypass the 3DS region-locking (with a little help anyway).

There have been previous attempts to disable Nintendo’s ridiculous region restrictions, but it required buying a certain game, installing custom firmware and plenty more general faffing.

But this new workaround, called Tubehax, is easier than anything we’ve tried before.

Installation is quick and painless, involving installing a few files on your SD card, changing your 3DS’s DNS setting and then booting up the YouTube app.

The video below shows how it’s done, but you can read more detailed instructions here.

There are a few catches to tubehax, though – and one of them is rather large. If you have Tubehax enabled, you won’t be able to access the Nintendo eShop. So if you want to play games from other regions then you’ll need the actual physical card.

However, since Tubehax works only if you have your 3DS pointed towards a specific DNS, resetting that will result in your 3DS being back to normal.

Smea has been very clear that this isn’t a hack that will let you run ROMs.

It does let you run homebrew and install custom 3DS themes.
