An eSports team sponsored by YouPorn has been banned from competing in the world’s biggest eSports league.
The Electronic Sports League (ESL) has booted Team YP (YouPorn) despite the outfit’s offer to drop its name and any overt reference to the adult entertainment sponsor.
The team has been sponsored by YouPorn since 2014, and VentureBeat has revealed just how far it was willing to go in order to remain in the competition. There is no direct promotion of the adult entertainment website, the branding is separate from that of YouPorn and the eSports team has ensured to make no direct promotion of pornographic content.
Venturebeat obtained email correspondence between the team and the league, in which Team YP offered a complete rebrand but was still rejected.

“Advertising pornography is not legal in the markets we operate in,” A statement from ESl to VentureBeat reads, “and the vast majority of partners we’re working with have strict ‘no drugs, no alcohol, no pornography’ rules that we’ve contractually taken on board.
“These aren’t new rules but ones that have been in our rulebooks for a long time. We have spoken to Team YP manager earlier this year, and in that conversation we’ve explained the situation and rules in detail and offered to look for potential alternatives in a bigger group. At the same time, we’re consulting with our legal teams about this. We will inform the team and the management as soon as we have any updates.”
It appears the team will now have to seek other means of competition, although options are now severely affected.
