You may need to change your Dropbox password – Here’s why

Dropbox is asking users who signed up for the cloud-sharing service before 2012 to change their passwords.

The preventative measure only applies to those who haven’t changed their password since.

Dropbox says there has been no recent data breach, but believes some email addresses and encrypted may have been obtained during an incident back in 2012.

At the time, Dropbox contacted users to say login credentials stolen from other websites had been used to sign into Dropbox accounts.

The users who haven’t changed their passwords since 2012 (or before) will receive a prompt next time they attempt to sign in, the company explained in a blog post (via PC World)

They’ll be encouraged to select stronger passwords this time around, with the cloud storage company offering tips on the strength off their selection. Users will also be encouraged to enable two-step authentication.

“If you don’t receive a prompt, you don’t need to do anything. However, for any of you who’ve used your Dropbox password on other sites, we recommend you change it on Dropbox and other services,” wrote Patrick Heim, head of trust and security at Dropbox.
