You can now rent a Nest Learning Thermostat on a monthly contract

The Nest Learning Thermostat is one of the more recognisable smart home products from recent years, with a distinctive design and intuitive functionality.

In fact, Phillips Hue aside, it might be the product that immediately comes to mind when anyone mentions the term ‘smart home’.

All of which makes this new offer from energy company Octopus Energy even more intriguing. Rather than investing in one of Nest’s sleek devices outright, you can now rent one on a monthly basis from Octopus.

The company itself is an independent energy supplier which provides low-cost renewable energy to homes throughout the UK.

Its latest offer on the 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat makes it the first company in the UK to make the device available as a monthly rental.

The £6.99 monthly payment also seems quite reasonable, considering the thermostat itself costs around £200 to buy. In order to take advantage of the offer, however, you’ll need to sign up to one of Octopus’ tariffs.

Greg Jackson, Octopus Founder, said: “By offering our customers access to intelligent technology, such as the Nest Learning Thermostat, we are not only helping people get the best deal on their energy needs, but also give them control of their usage.”

The Nest Learning Thermostat learns your preferences over time, programming itself to adjust the temperature of your house to ensure it’s at the right level when you arrive home.

Your full heating schedule can be controlled via an accompanying app or via desktop software.

It’s a neat device that we were suitably impressed with when we tried it out. Buying outright would be the ideal option, but it’s nice to see energy companies starting to provide offers such as this.

Let’s hope more energy providers take notice in the future.
