Yooka-Laylee, the spiritual successor of Banjo Kazooie is now being published by Team17, who are also looking into a possible physical release for the game.
The hugely successful kickstarter title has found itself a publisher. Team17 will now be publishing the game for indie developer Playtonic Games The experienced publisher is responsible for the Worms franchise and recent indie titles The Escapists and Beyond Eyes.
Team17 will not only be handling digital distribution, but is also looking into a possible physical release for the game. It isn’t clear what platforms it is are aiming for, but this is great news nonetheless.
Gavin Price, creative lead at Playtonic Games expanded upon the studio’s decision to partner with Team17:
“From the very start we said that we’d welcome only a partner that could genuinely improve the creation of our game, while respecting the independence and creative autonomy of our development team.”
Team17 will significantly benefit Yooka-Laylee in a myriad of ways, not least in expanded localisation, improved QA testing, certification and access to vastly better resources”
“Working alongside such a strong partner will allow the Playtonic team to focus 100% of our efforts on building the best possible version of Yooka-Laylee for backers and new fans alike.”
Yooka-Laylee’s kickstarter concluded with a total of £2,090,104 raised back June, smashing through all its potential stretch goals.

The highly anticipated project will feature environments and characters designed inspired by the genre’s most beloved classics, plus a soundtrack composed by David Wise (Donkey Kong Country), Steve Burke (Kameo: Elements of Power) and Grant Kirkhope (Banjo Kazooie).

“I can’t wait to start working together on this great game and hope this is the start of a long term relationship between Team17 and Playtonic” said Debbie Bestwick, Team17’s managing director.
A recent Kickstarter update by Playtonic Games stresses that the studio will still maintain creative control of the project, Team17 has been brought on board to help out with “boring-but-necessary business stuff.”
Yooka-Laylee is planned for an October 2016 release for PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, PC, Linux and Mac platforms.
