What is Yakuza Kiwami 2?

Kiwami 2 is a complete remake of Yakuza 2, having originally launched on PS2 back in December 2006. It’s become ridiculously rare since then, with used copies costing around £60 online. As such, knowing that there’s a remake in the works is a huge relief.

In the game, you travel as Kazuma Kiryu through the streets of Kamurocho, Tokyo and Sotenbori, Osaka. Both of these bustling cities are packed with shops, quests and mini-games for the player to seek out.

Yakuza Kiwami 2 release date

Yakuza Kiwami 2 is coming exclusively to PS4 on August 28, 2018. Having launched in Japan in December 2018, this is quite a fast turnaround for localisation.

Yakuza Kiwami 2 story – What’s it about?

Taking place a year on from the first game, Yakuza Kiwami once again puts you in the shoes of Kazuma Kiryu. The Dragon of Dojima, as expected, finds himself in yet another precarious situation involving the Japanese mafia.

Since the passing of Akira Nishikiyama in the first instalment, the Tojo Clan has been slowly falling apart, internal power struggles running riot. This inevitably leads to conflict with Osaka’s Omi Alliance, which happens to be backing the late Nishikiyama.

We’re hoping the narrative reaches similar dramatic heights as its predecessor, which had some truly brilliant moments that felt fresh yet faithful to their PS2 roots.

Yakuza Kiwami 2 gameplay – How does it play?

Kiwami 2 is in development exclusively for PS4, utilising the same gameplay engine that brought Yakuza 6 to life. Gone are the loading screens previously used to transition into buildings and battle, with every moment of the game aiming to feel completely seamless. Considering Yakuza 6 is already out in the wild, hopefully Kiwami 2 builds upon the new technology in exciting ways.

The usual combination of combat, exploration and surprisingly detailed mini-games return in Kiwami 2, although many of the latter activities remain unconfirmed. Our money is on arcades, hostess clubs and a large assortment of restaurants making a welcome return.

Players can also partake in side stories away from the main quest, getting themselves involved in all sorts of wacky situations. These normally offer generous EXP bonuses and handy items for use in battle, too!

If the combat in Yakuza 6 is anything to go by, Kiwami 2 will takes the level of insane brutality up a notch. Kiryu’s arsenal can be upgraded with new attacks, abilities and buffs that make him a force to be reckoned with in battle.

Kiwami 2 also adds something that wasn’t in the original release – an all-new campaign for Goro Majima. This story aims to expand upon the events first explored in Yakuza 0, giving more depth to the Mad Dog’s character.
