Xiaomi sells 800,000 Redmi Note 2 smartphones in 12 hours

Chinese upstart Xiaomi has sold more than 800,000 Redmi Note 2 smartphones during a weekend flash sale.

Xiaomi revealed the figure in a post on China’s Weibo social network. The sales occurred within the first 12 hours of a “flash sale” that temporarily made the Redmi Note 2 available for purchase in China over the weekend.

Xiaomi said the figure makes the Redmi Note 2 its fastest-selling smartphone to date, and the company has announced that a second flash sale is set to take place on 24 August.

The Redmi Note 2 was announced last week and continues to follow through on Xiaomi’s strategy to undercut competitors by creating affordable smartphones featuring internal specs traditionally seen on handsets more than three times in price.

Starting at 799 renminbi (£80), Xiaomi has loaded the Redmi Note 2 with some reasonably impressive hardware.

It includes a MediaTek Helio X10 chipset – also seen in the HTC M9+ – backed by a PowerVR G6200 GPU and 2GB of RAM.

The Redmi Note 2 also features a sizeable
5.5in,
1,080 x 1,920-resolution Full HD display and is powered by a 3,020mAh battery. It also offers a 13-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front snappers.

In terms of software, the Redmi Note 2 runs MIUI 7 OS, a heavily customised version of Android 5.1 Lollipop.

The Redmi Note 2 news follows wider growth in Xiaomi smartphone sales. Xiaomi revealed it sold 34.7 million smartphones in the first half of 2015 in a tweet in July.

The figure marked a 33 per cent year-on-year increase in Xiaomi phones sales. Xiaomi sold 61.1 million smartphones in 2014.

It remains unclear if Xiaomi will release the Redmi Note 2 in the UK. At the time of publishing, Xiaomi hadnt responded to TrustedReviews’ request for comment.

To date, Xiaomi has shied away from targeting the European market and sells its handsets in only a select number of countries outside of its native China. These include India, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and Brazil.
