Xbox One to push power saving option at set-up

Microsoft has announced plans to offer a power-saving option when setting up its Xbox One console.

The Xbox One games console has come in for some criticism in recent weeks for its less-than-efficient instant-on feature.

This allows you to switch your console on by saying “Xbox on,” provided you have a Kinect sensor plugged in. It also allows for software updates to be installed in the background.

The downside of this mode is a rather obvious one – your console will draw a lot more power than when it’s in a traditional powered off state.

Microsoft has always offered the option of such a classic, power-saving state, which saves an estimated 6 to 15 US dollars per year in energy costs. However, up to now it’s been buried in the settings menu.

That’s about to change. Over on Xbox Wire, Microsoft has announced plans to push the option of these two power states front and centre.

“While we believe Instant-on provides the best experience for our fans, we also believe in providing consumer choice which is why we offered the “Energy-saving” mode,” Microsoft says.

“In the coming months, new Xbox One owners around the world will be prompted with this choice in the initial console set-up process.”

It’s a tweak that will only really benefit new Xbox One owners, then, but as we mentioned you can access this power-saving mode at any time.
