Xbox One to get TV DVR functionality?

The Xbox One could get TV DVR functionality soon according to a new report.

Currently you can watch live TV through your Xbox One – either via your existing cable box or the handy Xbox One Digital TV Tuner – and even pause and rewind. But there’s no option to record content to your Xbox One.

Instead that is handled by your existing cable box.

However, that may well be about to change. According to sources speaking to notorious Microsoft blogger Paul Thurrott, a future Xbox One update will include TV DVR functionality.

Thurrott’s sources could only tell him that the Xbox One’s lack of TV DVR “will change, and most probably this year”. But there was no further information provided.

Microsoft is sticking to the usual line of “we do not comment on rumour or speculation” too.

This latest report comes after Microsoft confirmed Windows Media Centre would not be included with Windows 10.

Of course, many Media Centre fans actually use the product to record and watch TV shows via Media Centre PCs in the living room,” Thurrott explained. “Microsoft’s solution for this need will apparently be the Xbox One.”

Windows 10 is due to be made available this summer as a free upgrade to existing Windows customers.

The operating system will launch first on PC, followed by other platforms including tablets and Xbox One.
