Xbox One reveal watched by over 8 million, says Microsoft

Microsoft has revealed that last week’s Xbox One reveal was watched by over 8 million viewers worldwide.

Within the first 24 hours of the Xbox One reveal live stream becoming available to watch, Microsoft has confirmed the event achieved “record-breaking viewership.”

“The Xbox Reveal event drove record-breaking viewership – with over 8.45 million people watching the Xbox Reveal event in the first 24 hours, rivalling one of the top-most concurrent streamed events of all time,” reveals a blog on the Xbox Wire site.

The Xbox One reveal was streamed live on Xbox.com and Xbox Live for viewers in the UK and showcased Microsoft’s next-generation console as the all-in-one “ultimate home entertainment system”.

With the PS4 unveiled in February by Sony, anticipation for the Xbox Reveal on May 21 was at breaking point, causing the high viewing figures Microsoft has released.

“According to our friends at Akamai, our streaming partner, the Xbox Reveal event was among the most watched live broadcasts delivered by Akamai in their history, nearly doubling peak traffic records and eclipsing concurrent viewership high-water marks set by events such as the 2010 World Cup, Royal Wedding in 2011, and 2012 election night.”

Despite showcasing many Xbox One features like the live TV integration and entertainment functions, cloud gaming, improved Xbox One Kinect and 15 exclusive gaming titles coming within the first year of launch, issues surrounding other aspects of the console have caused many online debates.

Many have expressed their concern surrounding the pricing and operation of second-hand games for the console and the requirement to always have the Kinect peripheral always connected. It is now a necessity for the console, coming pre-packaged with Xbox One.

“With so much interest in Xbox One, we know there are unanswered questions and a desire for more information on Xbox One”, expressed Microsoft in the Xbox Wire blog post. “We have many exciting weeks ahead where we will provide more information – including E3, which is just 15 days away. Stay tuned.”

Microsoft’s pre-E3 Xbox One press briefing will occur on June 10 at 10am Pacific Time, meaning it’ll start at 6pm BST for UK fans.
