Microsoft has taken underhand tactics to boost its console sales, introducing an Xbox One price cut for those who trade in the company’s rivals’ devices.
Encouraging gamers to ‘ditch’ their PS3s, Microsoft has revealed that it will offer US consumers $100 (£61) off the Xbox One when they trade in their Sony-branded devices, an offer that will bring the console’s price down to $400 (£242).
“Ditch your PS3 and get $100 store credit towards Xbox One,” the Microsoft issued offer states.
Although Microsoft has currently failed to introduce the offer to UK gamers, those in the US and Canada can currently make use of the trade-in offer at a range of retailers. The deal will run for another month until February 28.
Despite having recorded strong sales figures in the run up to the Christmas period, shifting 3.9 million units before the end of 2013, the Xbox One has reportedly been outsold by the rival PS4 by a ratio of 1.5 to 1.
In order to make use of the $100 Xbox One price cut, Microsoft has stipulated that consumers must purchase its next-gen console at the same time as trading in the now superseded Sony device.
The Xbox maker has added that the trade-in console must be in a fully working condition “without broken/missing component, cracked display/housing, or liquid damage.”
Earlier today reports cited sources in the known as suggesting Microsoft will launch a new white Xbox One this October, with the lighter-hued console to be preceded by the first major Xbox One dashboard update this March.
