Xbox One October update rolling out now
Microsoft has started rolling out its October Xbox One software update, bringing with it a heap of new features.
A little over a month on from the last Xbox One update, Major Nelson has announced that another sizeable collection of improvements and brand new features is being sent out.
As predicted, the Xbox One October update focuses primarily on Snap, the handy shortcut menu that pops up whenever you press the Xbox button.
The update adds quick Snap access to a number of new elements, including Friends, Messages, Game DVR, clock, and the battery indicator. The Friends and Messages apps have been optimised accordingly to operate even while you’re playing a game.
It’s also now easier to close and open new Snap apps whilst playing a game, thanks to a new menu accessed by double-tapping the Xbox button.
Achievement sharing has been boosted, as has the ability to see what your friends have been playing.
The new update isn’t just about Snap and Friends, though. It also brings a bunch of new media-based improvements. For example, you can now stream media over a DLNA – great for those wireless home media server hook-ups. The MKV video format is also now supported.
There’s a new Live TV MiniGuide for countries that support the OneGuide (the UK already does so, but 11 more territories have been added), providing information on what’s currently playing as well as shortcuts to change channel.
Among the other new features, a universal TV remote control feature in SmartGlass stands out.
The update should be rolling out now, but if you want to check to see if the System Update is available, head to the System section of the Settings menu. If the System Update button can be selected, it means that the update is available.
