Xbox One Mini rumours dismissed

Rumours of a new, slimmer model of the Xbox One console appear to be wide of the mark, according to Microsoft’s Xbox chief.

It was reported last week that Microsoft would announce such a new model of the Xbox One in October, alongside a host of other new Windows 10-related devices.

However, the Xbox One isn’t quite ready for such a ‘Mini’ revamp, it seems. Responding to such rumours, Microsoft’s head of Xbox Phil Spencer tweeted: “Not real.”

It’s common for games consoles to receive iterative updates after a few years of existence, as manufacturing methods improve and components grow cheaper to make.

It had been suggested that this so-called Xbox One Mini would be roughly a third of the size of the current model, as well as quieter. Apparently, it would also drop the ability to play Blu-ray discs.

Spencer’s brief but categorical comments seem to suggest that such an Xbox One Mini isn’t even in production, let alone ready for an October unveiling.

Microsoft’s October event is expected to include the launch of two new Lumia devices, the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, made specifically to run Windows 10. We’re also expecting to see a new high-end tablet-PC hybrid announced in the Surface Pro 4.

Finally, Microsoft could be readying another fitness band in the Microsoft Band 2.
