Xbox One June update arrives

The major Xbox One June update will start rolling out this week, bringing with it a host new features and changes.

As part of this huge update, Xbox One owners will be able to use external hard drives for additional storage beyond the 500GB offered internally.

In fact, your Xbox One can support a maximum of two external HDD simultaneously, as long as they are 256GB or larger USB 3.0 drives.

You’ll be able to choose whether to use your external drive as your default storage device or continue with the internal for now. Once either of those is filled up though, your content will automatically spill over into the free storage.

“This is also a great way to take your content to a friend’s house and get straight into a game directly from an external hard drive,” said Major Nelson, aka Xbox Live’s Larry Hryb, when first announcing the external hard drive support.

The June Xbox One update will also let all Xbox One and Xbox 360 users access entertainment services including Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime Instant Video without an Xbox Live Gold membership, just as you can with the PS4 and PS3.

Xbox One OneGuide and the TV features will also arrive in the UK with the update, adding Favourites and App Channels when your Xbox One is connected via HDMI-in to your TV.

You’ll also be able to display your real name to your Xbox Live friends, or anyone else if you so wish. However, it won’t show up in online multiplayer gaming sessions, which will keep your identity safe.

Of course, a huge arrival for the Xbox One is the Games with Gold and Deals with Gold services. Starting this month, Xbox One owners will get two games per month for free.

In June Games with Gold for the Xbox One is offering Max: Curse of the Brotherhood and Halo: Spartan Assault.
