Microsoft has started rolling out its promised April Xbox One system update, which provides several new features.
Major Nelson announced that “we will begin rolling out the next Xbox One system update” in the early hours of this morning (or yesterday dinner time from his native US).
Among the list of new features, arguably the most requested is the return of online friend notifications. It used to be that the Xbox 360 would notify you when those on your friends list logged into Xbox Live, but the feature was curiously omitted from the Xbox One at launch.
Now that feature has been reinstated with the April system update. Also, you’ll be notified when friends are in multiplayer.
Other tweaks involve improvements to the game save system, so you’ll now have a progress bar and more information to keep you appraised of your saves and updates.
Microsoft also claims to have “fine-tuned” its divisive Kinect motion control system. This update sees improvements to the gesture functionality “to reduce false positives on non-hand objects triggering gesture commands.”
The Xbox One’s Blu-Ray player now supports 50 Hz content, and another update is promised for the coming days that will “round out these improvements.” GameDVR video quality has also been improved.
Elsewhere, the Xbox One controller has received some attention. The update will apparently reduce audio static on third party headsets using the adapter, as well as improving wireless connectivity.
Last up, the update system itself will be improved by this latest update. From now on, your Xbox One will be able to boot up from standby, download and apply a new update, and return to standby all on its own. You’ll also be able to perform a manual check for future updates.
