Microsoft has announced it is unlocking access to its Xbox Live entertainment apps from Friday April 20th through Monday April 23rd.

Throughout the period apps, such as 4oD and LoveFilm, will be accessible by customers without an Xbox Live Gold membership.

The full list of apps is as follows:

  • 4oD
  • Blink box
  • Crackle
  • Daily Motion
  • DEMAND 5
  • Last.FM
  • MSN Video
  • Netflix
  • Screenrush
  • Sky
  • VEVO
  • YouTube

The obvious highlights here are access to premium streaming services such LoveFilm and Netflix but the addition of Demand 5 and 4oD are also nice to see. The latter two join the iPlayer, which is permanently freely accessible, to make up almost a full roster of UK TV catchup services, with just ITV missing.

A couple of points to clear up are that you don't get free access to LoveFilm and Netflix unless using a free new customer trial - you'll otherwise have to be an existing subscriber. Also, access to multiplayer gaming is not included in this promotion.

Got an Xbox? Will you be taking advantage of this offer? Should Microsoft make access to these services free anyway? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Should they make access to these services free anyway? Too right they should! Why should you pay again simply to be able to access a paid-for service? Xbox Live should be able to stand on its own feet as a paid-for service in its own right by offering its own content/services sufficient to make the subscription worth paying.

Well done to the BBC for making free access a condition for carrying iPlayer. It says something about the pulling-power of the other services that they can't strike the same deal with Microsoft.
