Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4 launch for 2013 confirmed

“Next year is probably the right time for the new consoles,” said Matt Edmunds, COO of Stainless Games when we talked to him about the studio’s new Carmageddon remake for mobile devices.

Of course, “new consoles” refers to the next-gen gaming boxes from Microsoft and Sony, meaning we might well be seeing the Xbox 720 and PS4 launch in 2013 – which would tie in with rumours we have been hearing from various sources.

This little titbit slipped through when we were talking about a possible Carmageddon 2 title for the Wii U, which Edmunds claimed was a “very cool machine,” but a level behind these next-gen consoles. He also confided that between the current ones, Xbox was easier to develop for, being more similar to the PC in terms of architecture and with better tools offered by Microsoft.

If it’s true that we’ll see the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 launch in 2013 as Edmunds’ comment implies, we might be seeing the last of the consoles next year, as statements by Phil Eisler of Nvidia suggest that the X720 and PS4 will be the last traditional home consoles.

What do you think? Would you like to see the next generation of consoles, or do you think we will all be playing on tablets and smartphones before the Xbox 720 and PS4 launch? Maybe Ouya will become the dominating force in console land, though when we asked Edmunds if there were plans to develop for the open source console, he returned an emphatic “no!”.
