A Windows Phone device with the magnificent codename of Juggernaut Alpha has been spotted by the WP Bench handset benchmarking website.
On the site’s chart ranking devices by speed, the mystery machine comes leaps and bounds ahead of the other, more familiar names on the list, such as the HTC Titan.
According to The Next Web, it is likely to originate from a dual-core Windows Phone 8 testing device.
TNW quotes a comment from WMPowerUser, who suggests that the speed is probably due to more than a simple boost from faster hardware: “Windows Phone 8 apps themselves will be able to take advantage of native code, and will be many times faster at completing processor-intensive tasks than Windows Phone 7 handsets.”
A caveat is that only one “Juggernaut Alpha” handset has been logged by WP Bench so far. Therefore the score may not be as accurate as it is for other phones. TNW also reports that it’s possible to spoof device names.
So, is it a fluke, a prank or early evidence of a Windows Phone 8 device in the wild? Whatever it is, it probably won’t come out with such a bombastic name as Juggernaut, which would be a letdown to some folks, especially comic book fans.
