A mere eight months after it was released in the US...
With all of last week’s news dominated by the (ultimately muted) launch of Windows Vista this passed us – and seemingly the vast majority of the web – unnoticed: Windows OneCare has finally gone global.
The all-in-one antivirus and spyware solution (which I first previewed waaaaaay back in May 2005!) will be immediately available via online download to 17 counties in EMEA including good old rip off Britain.
Naturally, we live up to our infamous tag too since the OneCare scheme – which is sold to Yanks at a first year discount of just $20 with subsequent years raised to $50 – costs us an incredible £37.99 here. For piece of software with no packaging that is a frightening premium and makes it considerably more expensive than the offerings from established major players such as Norton or McAfee. For example, OEM versions of Norton’s AntiVirus 2007 can be found online for little more than a tenner.
By some small way of consolidation OneCare can at least be installed on three PCs which should be enough for most households. Meanwhile anyone involved in the beta testing programme for OneCare will be entitled to a 60 per cent discount for the first year.
So, like Vista, OneCare is finally out and, like Vista, will probably meet with similar levels of apathy.
By contrast I suspect AhnLab, Aladdin, ALWIL, BullGuard, Cat, Computer Associates, Dialogue Scanner, Eset, F-Secure, Frisk, GFI, GriSoft, Hauri, Kaspersky, McAfee, MicroWorld, Norman, Panda, Proland, Sophos, Sybari, Symantec, Trend Micro, VirusBuster and Zero-Knowledge will all be breathing a deep sigh of relief…
