Windows 8 Retail Packaging

You know Microsoft Windows 8? It’s going to be big, and it will be available across all platforms: Windows 8 Phone for mobiles, Windows 8 RT for ARM-based tablets, and good old regular Windows 8, in all its various incarnations, for X86 systems like your PC, laptop, netbook or Windows Slate. We’re never likely to see the former two on store shelves as they’ll come pre-installed, but the latter will be available at brick and mortar outlets, just like previous versions of Microsoft’s OS.

Now The Verge has managed to nab a shot of just what those retail boxes will look like. Thankfully, the only versions available at retail will be the regular and Pro editions. Windows 8 comes in a clean white box, while the Pro version comes in timeless black. We can’t disagree with that colour choice, as white is vanilla while black is cool (remember folks, we’re purely talking about packaging colours here).

Mind you, somehow the new shape-filled Metro logo just doesn’t appeal as much to us as the previous one did – it just seems a bit too… busy and like it’s trying too hard. Still, as software boxes go these are fairly elegant.

So will you be buying a copy of Windows 8 when it launches on the 26th of October? Or are you happier without the Metro (no, can’t mention Metro) touch interface and will you just stick with good old Windows 7? Let us know in the comments!
