Windows 8.1 user base growing steadily

Microsoft Windows 8.1 obviously has more appeal than its predecessor as the user base has been growing steadily over the five months since its release.

As of March, Windows 8.1 has been on the market for five full months and is continuing to grow in popularity. However, the original Windows 8 has stayed flat over the last month.

Market share data from Net Applications reveal that Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 combined have grown 0.62 per cent from the previous month, jumping from 10.68 per cent to 11.30 per cent.

Breaking that down further, Windows 8.1 grabbed 0.59 per cent, causing it to grow from 4.3 per cent to 4.89 per cent. Windows 8 only grew a tiny 0.03 per cent from 6.38 to 6.41 per cent.

Previously the Windows 8 user base was shrinking, but thanks to a push from Microsoft and Windows 8.1 a free download, the overall users are now rising steadily.

Despite  being outranked by Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 combined for the past three months, Windows 7 has outgained them both, grabbing a 1.46 per cent market share jumping from 47.31 per cent to 48.77 per cent.

Although support for Windows XP is coming to an end very shortly, the OS still accounts for 27 per cent of the Windows market share. It dropped 1.84 per cent from 29.53 to 27.69 per cent though.

Overall, Windows accounts for 90.94 per cent of the overall desktop market, with Mac accounting for 7.57 per cent and Linux just 1.49 per cent.

Windows did grow 0.10 per cent this month, OS X slipped 7.57 per cent and Linux actually gained 0.01 per cent.

The Net Applications data is taken from 160 million unique users by monitoring around 40,000 websites and capturing the desktop edition used.
