Windows 10 to replace Windows Phone
Microsoft today announced that Windows 10 will replace Windows Phone as the mobile operating system for smartphones running the Windows.
Speaking at a press conference for the announcement of Windows 10 – Microsoft’s next operating system – a Microsoft representative answered “Yes” to the question “Is Windows 10 the next version of the phone operating system too?”.
Joe Belfiore, Corporate Vice President, Operating Systems Group at Microsoft, explained further “We’re trying to blend the experience across PCs, tablets. The best way to think of it, it will be a natural step forward from the Windows 8.1 model.” However the mobile version of Windows 10 will not have a desktop mode.
He thinks this is the right approach to take. “Part of the reason we organized it the way we did, is that there will be champions of every device type. It was intentional to put together the PC, tablet, phone. Similar capabilities, but at the end they differ.”
How will this affect current Windows Phone owners? We’re not quite sure yet but on the plus side Microsoft claim that all Windows Phone apps will work on Windows 10.
Other big news from today’s press conference includes the welcome return of the Start Menu to Windows 10 and that the next version of Windows will skip a number and be called Windows 10 and not Windows 9 as many expected.
Windows 10 will be released in the second half of 2015.
