Windows 10 Mobile finally arrives on legacy Lumia phones

After months of conjecture, previews, missed targets and more, Microsoft is finally ready to roll out Windows 10 Mobile to existing handsets.

Many smartphone owners with Lumia devices rocking Windows Phone 8.1, will be able to update from today and enjoy some of the new-gen software’s universal features.

The initial handsets supposed by the roll out are: Lumia 430, Lumia 435, Lumia 532, Lumia 535, Lumia 540, Lumia 635 (1 GB RAM), Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL, Lumia 735, Lumia 830, and Lumia 930.

More phones will be included in due course, with Microsoft advising users download the existing UpdateAdvisor app, which can be used to scan for updates.

Currently, the only new phones on the market running Windows 10 Mobile are the Lumia 950 and Lumia 930 XL, with Microsoft believed to be trimming the line up right back.

Microsoft has been previewing the mobile version of Windows 10 since last summer, but has held off on releasing a completed version to consumers until now.

Those downloading the operating system will be able to benefit from Universal Windows apps, designed to work across all platforms.

There’s also the neat Continuum tool, that allows Windows 10 Mobile users to plug their handset into a monitor mouse and keyboard in order to use it as a desktop PC.

There’s also compatibility with Windows Hello, which allows users to unlock their device’s just by looking at it. Users will also get more control over their desktop through the ability to resize live tiles.
