The Windows 10 Technical Preview is set to hit smartphones for the first time, later this month, and now reports claim to have revealed which handsets will be first in line for the update.

According to Windows Central, the HTC One M8 for Windows, The Lumia 1020 and Lumia 1520 are the handsets being tested internally

Apparently, the Operating Systems Group (OSG) has completed the testing for the first preview version and Microsoft has distributed Early Release Software internally.

More handsets are also likely to be granted access to the preview, with the source report claiming the trio does not represent the full list of phones. The newer Lumia 830 and Lumia 930 are also likely to get in on the testing program.

However, according to Windows Central there could be plenty of drawbacks in store for those who’re granted early access.

The site says Windows 10 is draining battery life “very fast” while also leaving the device vulnerable to overheating. The HTC One M8 preview also disables the Glance Screen, according to the report.

Last month, Microsoft detailed its plans for Windows 10 on mobile devices, with the aim of updating as many of the current range as possible.

Just this weekend, Microsoft’s Joe Belifore tweeted to confirm Windows 10 will also be available for a range of lower-end devices with just 512MB of memory. Budget handsets such as the Lumia 530 are in line for the update, but Belifore said “features may vary.”
