Windows 10 footage gives early look at Cortana for desktop

While we’ve known that Cortana will be setting up shop on Windows 10 for a while now, we’ve seen very little in the way of actual software demonstration.

That’s all changed now, as WinBeta has uploaded footage of Microsoft’s voice AI running on an unreleased Windows 10 build.

It’s our first real glimpse at how Cortana will make the switch from mobile-borne Windows Phone to your desktop PC.

For the most part, it looks like Cortana hasn’t changed during the transition, with all the expected features appearing on Microsoft’s early desktop build.

Existing functionality like setting up reminders, mapping features, calling, and searching all seem to be working in the video.

Despite this, the basic white panel and small blue circle that make up Cortana’s on-screen presence seems overly prosaic and will likely warrant an aesthetic upgrade come final release.

Microsoft showed off its Siri/Google Now-rivalling Cortana back in April at its annual Build conference in San Francisco.

It was launched as mobile-specific software initially, but Microsoft is looking to transition it to the desktop as part of its Windows 10 cross-platform unification.

Windows 10 is due to land sometime next year, and should see all platforms share one single operating system and app store.

Cortana is currently available with Windows Phone 8.1 in the UK, as well as China and the USA.

The software finds its namesake in the Halo video game series, wherein Cortana is the AI helper of protagonist Master Chief.
