Windows 10 features to skip some Lumia handsets

Microsoft has confirmed that not all Lumia handsets will reap the benefits of all Windows 10 features.

The Redmond-based company revealed that some lower end devices might miss out on some features, although it didn’t confirm specific handsets or features.

Joe Belfiore, Microsoft’s Corporate VP for the Operating Systems Group, tweeted: “Hey all: we are working on Win10 for 512MB, including 520. Our ambition is to make Win10 available for these devices but features may vary.”

He was referring to Lumia handsets that use 512MB RAM modules, a list which includes the Lumia 520, the Lumia 630, the Lumia 625, and the Lumia 530.

It’s pretty ambitious for a mobile company to try and retrofit new, advanced software to older units with sub-par specs.

This is why it’s fairly unsurprising that not all of the 512MB handsets will get access to all of the new Windows 10 features.

Microsoft still hasn’t released its Windows 10 preview software for phones just yet, so we’ll have to wait for that before we might know which phones are truly affected by the possibility of missing features.

Fortunately there’s not long to wait, as Microsoft is expected to launch the preview mobile OS at some point this week.

Windows 10 was announced last year, marking a new effort by Microsoft to synchronise all of its OS platforms into one cohesive system.

The newly unified desktop, mobile, and gaming platforms will share a singular app store, as well as the same design aesthetic and improved cross-platform connectivity.
