Ahead of the upcoming PS4 release date and Xbox One launch, developers have claimed Nintendo’s Wii U isn’t out of the race just yet, claiming the struggling console “still has the potential to surprise.”
Despite Wii U sales figures topping just 160,000 units in the year’s second financial quarter, and retailers beginning to drop the console, experts have predicted that if a few more big name games make it to the platform then
“The Wii U still has the potential to surprise people,” Emile Morel, Lead Game Designer on Rayman Legends said in an exclusive interview with TrustedReviews.
“Right now this console still needs a few more games really showing that this console is special, but these games will arrive and will definitely help selling more Wii U.”
Echoing a thought already expressed by many gamers, retailers and publishers, Morel has suggested that the Wii U’s currently limited appeal is down in large to its small collection of big-draw games.
“In the end it’s all about the games and a few titles can make the difference,” he said. “As for the potential of the Wii U, I think there are amazing things to do with the Wii U GamePad and this device can help create new ways to play videogames, especially in co-op.”
Although acknowledging that games developed for the Wii U run the risk of falling under the banner of ‘gimmicky’ thanks to the console’s touchscreen controller, motion gaming and lack of hardcore gaming pedigree, Morel has claimed that it is precisely this array of innovative possibilities which make it a potential threat to Sony and Microsoft’s next-gen consoles.
“To me, the Wii U really offers new ways to play videogames and that’s something every gamer can be interested in,” he told us.
Having been on sale for almost a year, the ailing Wii U is to face increased competition in the coming weeks with both the Xbox One and PS4 release date set to hit retailers around the holiday period. The Xbox One price has already been set at £429, a full £80 more than the £349 PS4 price.
