Nintendo has officially unveiled Wii Fit U, the next-generation version of its popular health and fitness game, with a Nintendo Wii Fit U release date confirmed for early 2013.

Making the announcement during Tuesday’s Nintendo Direct presentation, the Japanese gaming giant has revealed that the fitness based gaming release would arrive in the US “in the first part” of next year for the newly released Nintendo Wii U console.

Wii Fit U will feature a number of additional features over the 2008 version of Wii Fit, chief among them being the Fit Meter, a pedometer that allows Wii Fit U to track the player’s activity outside of the home: a walk in the park or a run, for instance. It then wirelessly uploads the data about calories burnt and other fitness parameters into the player’s Wii U at home.

The game will feature 77 activities. These include yoga, aerobics and strength training, all carried over from Wii Fit for the original Nintendo Wii, plus several new ones such as dance.

There’s no word on whether the Wii Fit U UK launch date will match that of the US version, but we’re hopeful that it won’t be too far behind.

Will you be investing in Wii Fit U as a way to keep fit, or is a game no match for getting traditional and “hitting the gym”? Share your thoughts on the matter with us via the Trusted Reviews Twitter and Facebook feeds or through the comment boxes below.
