Whoops! Some Pixel 2 XL units are arriving without Android

The Google Pixel 2 XL is turning into a bit of a problem child for the Mountain View firm.

Heavy criticism of the ‘lifeless’ OLED panel have been followed up by reports of an audio recording issue.

Others have cited problems with Android Auto and now some early buyers are claiming some devices are shipping without Android fully installed on the phone.

A number of users have taken to Reddit and social media (via Android Police), claiming the phone arrived with them in a bricked state, unable to boot the operating system.

Users have been greeted by the message “Can’t find valid operating system. The device will not start.”

The unfortunate Pixel 2 buyers are asked to visit the g.co/ABH url on an alternate device. The page informs users about corrupted operating systems, but doesn’t offer a solution for those hampered by the flaw.

Google says “we’re looking into” the problem. but it’s clear there’s a quality control issue in play here.

The one to buy?

Beyond the issues currently being reported, the Pixel 2 XL has enjoyed critical acclaim since its unveiling last month.

The screen issue is the only thing that stood between the phone and a perfect score here at TrustedReviews.

Our mobile editor Max Parker says: “It might not be the best Android phone available in every area, but the Google Pixel 2 XL is the one I would buy. It has a stunning camera, the best version of Android and I love the texture Google has put over the metal back.”
