Apple has unveiled its ‘Best of 2012’ iTunes picks with WhatsApp Messenger lining up as the year’s most popular iPhone application.

Topping the list of most downloaded paid for iPhone apps in 2012, WhatsApp saw off competition from a year of high-profile and addictive hits, with the hugely popular Draw Something lining up as the year’s second most downloaded iPhone application. Rounding out the podium positions, Rovio’s Angry Birds Space was third.

Once again a dominant force on the iPhone app scene, developer Rovio has multiple titles in the Best of 2012 top 10, with Angry Birds Space backed up by the recently released Angry Birds Star Wars in fourth, the original Angry Birds offering in fifth and spin off title Bad Piggies in tenth.

Despite only launching in recent weeks, the official YouTube iPhone app has topped the list of most downloaded free iPhone applications, although following yesterday’s Google Maps iPhone app release, this could potentially change before the year’s end.

On the tablet front, the Best of 2012 lists saw Apple’s own Pages application line up as the year’s most download paid for iPad app whilst Skype was the year’s most frequently downloaded free iPad application. With a number of the leading iPhone apps having their own dedicated iPad counterpart, the list of most download iPad apps saw a number of familiar sights with Rovio once again featured heavily.

Whilst Angry Birds Space HD, Angry Birds Star Wars HD and Angry Birds HD lined up in positions two, six and ten on the list of most frequently paid for iPad apps respectively, iPhone hit Draw Something featured in third.
