WhatsApp may be developing web app

Popular messaging app company WhatsApp may be working on a web client, according to recent reports.

You might be familiar with WhatsApp for its cross-platform smartphone messaging app, but the Facebook-owned company is said to be branching out to the desktop.

Dutch website AndroidWorld.nl has discovered code in a recent version of the WhatsApp Android app that mentions “WhatsApp Web,” logging in and out of computers, and status and latest activity tracking in web sessions.

If that isn’t proof enough that WhatsApp is cooking up something web browser-shaped, then consider an interview give to TechCrunch last week by Pavel Durov. The founder of rival messaging app Telegram reckons that WhatsApp is working on a web version of its app because the company has been trying to poach its own web app developer.

Of course, the prospect of a WhatsApp web app raises a number of interesting questions. One of those concerns authentication. One of WhatsApp’s defining features is the ability to get set up and connected quickly and easily through your mobile number, but of course that won’t be available through a web browser.

It seems as if the solution will be to use your phone to authenticate the web version, with a close hook-up between the two.
