WhatsApp has been given a wearable makeover, as a new update to the mobile messaging service adds support for Android Wear devices.

With a WhatApp beta landing to test the wearable waters, owners of the LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live can now fill their Android Wear watch with their favourite free-to-use messaging service – sorry BBM.

Although not yet available through the Google Play Store, the WhatsApp update – which can be downloaded directly from the company’s website – can be added to any Android smartphone running Android 2.1 or higher.

To make use of the Android Wear functionality, however, the software needs to be added to a device running Android 4.3 or above.

With full message preview letting users view all received messages, the wearable WhatsApp service will also let smartwatch owners respond using a number of stock replies or through Android Wear’s voice reply functionality.

Like Android Wear’s own stock responses, the wearable WhatsApp is a little short in its retorts. With the expected ‘yes’ and ‘no’ replies available, ‘see you soon’ joins the mix alongside the youth-appeasing ‘haha’ and ‘Lol’.

It is currently unclear exactly when, or indeed if, AndrodWear support will be rolled out to the Google Play available WhatsApp service, although with the wearables market continuing to grow we can’t see full support being too far off.
