Instant messaging application WhatsApp today revealed a considerable visual makeover, bringing it in line with Apple’s latest iOS 7 interface.

Sporting a new, flatter design, the update also boasts an array of new features including broadcast lists and an enhanced location sharing service.

A recent survey revealed that WhatsApp is currently the most popular mobile messaging app, with 44 per cent out of a sample of nearly 4,000 people choosing it over rival options from Facebook and BlackBerry.

Earlier this autumn, WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum, announced that the instant messaging app had over 350 million monthly active users with the service now carrying more messages than Facebook.

With WhatsApp clearly in hot demand, smartphone owners can download the app for free from the App store, but must pay a 99p fee following their first twelve months of usage.

As well as the newly refreshed iOS application, WhatsApp is available on both Google’s Android operating system and the increasingly popular Windows Phone 8 system from Microsoft.
