webOS Designers Depart For iPhone & Android Teams

It may have backtracked on its stupid comments about not making smartphones, but HP has suffered a double blow this week with two of its key webOS designers jumping ship for rivals.

Head designer Matias Duarte is the most high profile having departed for Google's Android team. Duarte was responsible for creating the elegant UI for webOS which is arguably still the best on the market and is likely to be tasked with giving Android similar polish.

Second is fellow webOS senior designer Rich Dellinger who has joined Apple. Dellinger's ingenious creation was the super slick and unobtrusive notification system at the heart of webOS, for my money also still the benchmark for smartphone operating systems and something the iPhone's newly renamed iOS needs to desperately refresh.

All of which bodes extremely well for both Apple and Google. On the other hand you have to wonder just what is going on at HP...

The words 'bought' and 'Lemon' spring to mind.

@Paul Blakeman Well no, more a case of being bought 'by' the lemon. I mean who's disappointing who here, right?

Obviously HP forgot that in buying a "people" business the assets can up and leave with their immense knowledge very quickly. Having said that there are people left behind in the team who can rise to the challenge of filling the void left behind - 2 people do not create the whole OS.
