We can’t put our finger on this rumored new Chrome OS security feature… yet

Google is seemingly experimenting with adding fingerprint sensor support for Chrome OS, which would enable Chromebook makers to add the security feature.

The Chrome Unboxed website found evidence within the Chromium repositories showing Google is testing the feature for potential use in an upcoming Chromebook codenamed Kevin.

The company is already adding a PIN unlock feature to Chrome OS, a la Android smartphones. However, the addition of fingerprint sensor support may be the key to attracting more users to jump on board with Chromebook.

Windows 10 supports fingerprint unlocking, while there are rumours Apple plans to follow suit by adding a Touch ID sensor to MacBooks.

One would assume fingerprint sensing tech could be used to unlock apps, access password protected websites or even log into Google Docs. Perhaps Google could event enable payments via Android Pay?

Whether Google has any plans to debut this at is forthcoming Pixel phone launch, rumored to be on October 4 remains to be seen.

At the moment it seems the company is at the very least experimenting with the tech, but it’s by no means a guarantee we’ll see it in future versions of Chrome OS.
