Watch Dogs 2 launch sales dramatically lower than Watch Dogs 1

Watch Dogs 2 has failed to make a significant impact in the UK Sales Chart in its first week of release, falling behind the numbers set by the first game.

Ubisoft’s open-world hacking sequel entered the all-format charts at number 2, trailing just behind Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

It’s worth noting that Infinite Warfare has held the top spot for three weeks now, with Watch Dogs 2 “narrowly missing out” on first place, according to Chart-Track.

This means the sequel managed to sell less than 80k units last week, a stark difference to the 380k shipped by its predecessor in May 2014.

Chart-Track doesn't take into account digital sales across PS4, Xbox One and PC, which may change the outlook of the situation going forward.

The original Watch Dogs was marketed as a major title for PS4 and Xbox One ahead of its launch, and much of this hype likely contributed to its impressive sales.

Many players found the experience to be underwhelming, so may have avoided the sequel as a result. We’ve also had a flood of impressive AAA titles launching in the past few weeks, so perhaps it's a matter of oversaturation.

It was expected for there to be a drop between the two, but a difference of 300k is surprisingly large.

Watch Dogs 2 is a noticeable improvement over its predecessor, providing us with an experience boasting more personality, variety and fun. Here’s a snippet of our 8/10 review:

“Watch Dogs 2 is no great leap forward, but it sees the series headed in the right direction with more colour, more flair and a real sense of fun. The action’s solid and the mission design much less generic, while Ubisoft Montreal has given you a great set of tools and the freedom to use them as you will. If the original Watch Dogs was a mean-looking hound, all bark, no bite, the sequel’s a more playful pooch that’s all about having a good time – and it’s all the better for it.”
