Want a OnePlus 2? Just trade in your flagship Samsung phone

Struggling to get a OnePlus 2 invite? There’s a way you can get your hands on the phone, help out a charity, and lose a lot of cash all at the same time.

OnePlus has launched a brand new charity scheme called ‘Take The Edge Off’ that’s nothing short of bewildering.

The company will let you trade in your Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+, or Note 5, in return for a free OnePlus 2 smartphone.

That probably sounds like a strange proposition, and here’s why. The OnePlus 2 currently retails at £239. Here’s a list of prices for the Samsung phones included in the trade-in scheme:

  • Samsung Galaxy S6 – £479
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge – £549
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ – £629
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 5 – £450

But wait! It’s not as profit-mongering as it might sound. OnePlus plans to donate all of the Samsung smartphones to charity, specifically Hope Phones.

Hope Phones is a forward-thinking non-profit organisation that brings medical technology to those in need,” explains OnePlus.

It continues: “Your contribution in this swap could help someone in a remote area of the world get fast, efficient, and professional medical care.”

There’s another caveat though; by applying for the scheme, you’re not actually guaranteed to be accepted.

OnePlus is only selecting a maximum of 50 “winners” from the competition, and it’s due to end on October 18.

“The OnePlus 2 was created by tech lovers, for tech lovers. We keep our devices free from gimmicks and bloatware,” reads the OnePlus website. “We explore what’s fresh and exciting, as opposed to recycling the same technology as incredible breakthroughs time and time again.”

It continues: “We’re confident that we’ve created one of the most fantastic smartphones on the market.”

OnePlus adds: “So confident that we’re willing to put our money where our mouths are.”
